MADURAI
Governing council members of the American College on Tuesday lodged a complaint with the directorate of vigilance and anticorruption (DVAC) against director of collegiate education R. Uma Rani, alleging that she had connived with CSI Bishop Christopher Asir by issuing a letter of approval in his favour for pecuniary gain.
Madurai's oldest educational institution of repute is once again caught in a controversy with a majority of teaching and non-teaching staff raising a banner of revolt against CSI Bishop Christopher Asir for illegally making his "puppet" R.
Mohan principal-in-charge.
A fortnight after principal Chinnaraj T. Joseph's retirement on November 27, the Bishop’s men, escorted by the police, inducted Mohan as the principal last Friday.
Mr Joseph, in fact, had handed over charge to viceprincipal P.R. Anbudurai.
“But armed with a letter of approval issued by director Uma Rani agreeing to the Bishop’s appointment of Mr Mohan as the principal-incharge, his men forcibly took over the college,” a senior professor said.
However, by then, Prof. Anbudurai had ordered the closure of the college till January 2. As per the college bylaws, only the principal, who doubles as secretary of the governing council, is authorised to convene the governing council meeting and not the Bishop, the council president.
“This has been deemed valid by the Madras high court too in August 2009.
But the Bishop appointed his candidate in gross violation of the law with the connivance of the director of collegiate education,” Mr Joseph claimed.
In their complaint to DVAC, governing council members John Shekar and S. Suriyakumar stated that the director issued an approval even though she knew fully well that Bishop is not the official correspondent.
“This amounts to abusing her official capacity to favour the Bishop,” they alleged.
