MKU Committee checks out possiblities of conducting Exams

THE NEW INDIAN EXPRESS DATED 31-03-2011

Examination Committee appointed by the Senate of Madurai Kamaraj University to enquire into the possibilities of conducting examination for the students in the American College visited the campus on Wednesday (30-03-2011).

The Committee was headed by R. Madanagopal, Syndicate member, P.T.Manoharan, Syndicate member, Alagappan, Registrar-in-Charge, Rajyakodi, Controller of Examinations and David Amirtharajan, Dean, College Development Council were the other members.

According to the committee head, Madanagopal, they have conducted the preliminary study on the possibilities of conducting examinations. They said talks with both parties in this regard. "While one party pointed out that the classes were held only for 17 days in the entire semester, other party said that the classes were going on smooth". We will present a report to the Vice Chancellor and will meet shortly to discuss further course of action" he said.

"We will work towards protecting the interest of students. Further, we also checked the possibilities of releasing the 5th semester examination results as consent of both parties was required for that matter. We will work on this issue as well so that it helps the students to apply for higher studies", he added. [All these will return to normalcy if the High Level Committee inquires and settles the college issue at the earliest!].

According to a press statement from Dr. P.R.Anbudurai, Principal-in-Charge, he presented a report giving the details how classes could not be conducted as he and many of his colleagues were physically thrown out of the college by Bishop's nominee, R.Mohan and Davamani Christopher, son-in-law (of the CSI Bishop A. Christopher Asir), with the help of police and rowdies on 10th December 2010. Since then 112 out of 192 (including Aided and SF) faculty members and 91 out of the total 132 non-teaching staff do not have access to the classrooms and laboratories, which has resulted in non-conducting of classes for 282 courses out of the total 449 courses.

The Bishop had illegally appointed several faculty members in the place of the existing faculty and non-teaching staff. Anbudurai also charged that Bishop had planted 40 odd rowdy elements in the campus.

Unless these illegally appointed (rowdy) elements were expelled, it was NOT possible for the faculty members and staff to discharge their duties, he noted.

The staff also insisted that the end of semester examinations could be held only if required number of classes were taken for the students. Continuous assessment and final evaluation must be made only by bona-fide teachers and NOT by unauthorized persons allegedly appointed by Bishop and stressed that there should not be any violation of autonomy rules.

Anbudurai suggested that if necessary police protection and support from the Awards Committee of the University were provided, he would consider publishing the odd semster results which will help students apply for admission for higher studies.

The faculty were very emphatic that there should not be two separate exams conducted for any reason.

They also strongly objected to the presence of David Amirtharajan, Dean, College Development Council of MKU as he is one of the applicants who responded to the invitation of Bishop, the press statement observed.
