WAKE UP….and PUT AN END TO THE AMERICAN COLLEGE ISSUE...

It is high time that the Tamil Nadu government should wake-up and do the needful, particularly take-up corrective measures for bringing back normalcy in the American College.

December 10, 2010:
The college problem started on 10th December 2010 when the Madurai Ramnad Diocese Bishop Christopher Asir intervened in the college administration by illegally appointing a principal and subsequently with the collusion of policemen, broke opened the Principal’s office and took-over the college administration.
Dr. P.R. Anbudurai, who was functioning as Vice-Principal and assumed charge as Principal and Secretary on 2nd December 2010, advanced the Christmas holidays and closed the college since the afternoon of 10th December 2010, till further announcement. There were strong rumors that Bishop & his men are planning to take over the college on that day. To prevent any untoward happenings, Dr.P.R.Anbudurai closed the college on 10th as he felt that Bishop’s men may unleash violence.
NORMAL COLLEGE LIFE CAME TO AN END on 10th December 2010.

January 5, 2011:
As they wanted, the Bishop’s men without proper order and with full protection of the policemen ‘took over’ the college administration on 10-12-2010. They announced that the college will reopen on 5th January 2011. Prior to reopening, the Bishop’s adminstration made ‘threatening’ phone calls to students’ parents and gaurdians, faculty and non-teaching to return to college on 5th January. But there was only a lukewarm response.

Morethan 80% of the Faculty and non-teaching staff did NOT respond to Mohan’s call.
Out of 3400 students  enrolled in the college, initially only about 300 students  responded to Mr. Mohan's (Bishp’s appointee) call on the reopening day. This is just one category of students (let us call, category 1).

Rest of the students stayed home fearing thugs implanted by the bishop's group and are still expecting that the college would return to normalcy, someday or the other...

January 8, 2011:
At this juncture, in response to the telegrams and memorandums of  the agitating staff, on 8th January 2011, the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister made a formal announcement,  stating that he has orderd for a ‘High Level Committee’ to inquire into and solve American College issue.
All the students and staff staying away, had a sigh of relief and expected the government to act fast in settling the issue...

February 18, 2011:
Even a month after the announcement, a proper Government Order (G.O) was NOT promulgated.
Only on 18th February 2011, the Chief Minister signed the G.O, officially giving charge to the ‘High Level Committee’ to inquire and submit a report to Government.

In the meantime, among the remaining 3100 students who were not attending any classes sofar,  about 300 students took courage, came to college  and were attending classes taken by agitating faculty 'under the tree'. These students belong to another category  (let us call, category 2).

March 14, 2011: Rampage!
Time was running out.. Its about a month since the G.O was signed... no sign of the High Level Committee starting its inquiry process... Frustration building up...
To attract the attention of the government and its officials, Faculty and Non-teaching staff went on a one-day fasting along with the students who were already on a relay fasting. To make a mockery of this, the Bishop’s men announced an “Eating Fast” on the same day and that too near the same venue were staff and students were on a fast. Thugs were brought by the bishop’s men to sabotage the fasting of the staff and students. Police withdrew at a premeditated time and a large scale violence was unleashed in the campus. 12 four wheelers and more than 32 two wheelers that belong to staff and students who were on tfasting on that day were severely damaged. Many got injured. POLICE WERE MERE WITNESS to all these events.

March 19, 2011:
Elections for TN assembly announced on 19th March 2011!

March 24, 2011:
Irked by the silence of the ‘High Level Committee’ in initiating the inquiry process, these students went on a hunger strike and also fought against the 'vandalisation of the college' by bishop's group.
Even after a month after the G.O was signed, the High Level Committee did not even initiate its inquiry process.  One of the students, went to court seeking direction to initiate the process of enquiry. Justice Venkatraman directed the High Level committee to come up with a schedule to the process of inquiry.

March 29, 2011:
The announcement of "assembly elections" was shown as a reason for the government's delay.
Anyway, after judicial intervention, the High Level Committee met for the first time on 29th March 2011. In that meeting they decided that they would initiate their inquiry process on 18th April 2011. They announced to the court about this.

In the meantime, an independent committee, a Fact Finding Team visited the college and collected facts from both the factions This Citizen's Forum’s,  Fact Finding Committee made an observation that …”It will hardly an hour for the government to solve this problem and we are wondering what is stopping the government from doing so…!!!”…

April 18, 2011:
The High Level Committee made an official inquiry with the two factions, collected the necessary documents from them. In that meeting they said that they will go through the documents and soon decide.

Now, on April 28, 2011:
All the faculty, non-teaching staff and students staying away from college fearing are waiting for the High Level Committee’s report and action by the government.

It is gloomy… depressing...  and for many it is still a distant dream…

The silence of the government makes us wonder…
What sort of world we are living in..?
Is there a government machinery fuctioning?

There are about 2800 students have absolutely stayed away from college, expecting the college to return to normalcy (a third category of students). The academic year is going to end soon?
The priority is that classes and End of Semester exams have to be conducted for the category 2 and 3 students. The worst affected are the final year degree students..

THE COLLEGE NEEDS  JUSTICE…
THE COLLEGE SHOULD RETURN TO NORMALCY….
STUDENTS, FACULTY AND NON-TEACHING STAFF MEMBERS ARE SUFFERING…
EVERY DAY PASSES LIKE AN EON…
ENOUGH IS ENOUGH….
GOVERNMENT SHOULD ACT FAST….  AND BRING AN END TO THIS IMBROGLIO..

UNITED WE STAND.. AND
FIGHT TILL THE END..
IN TRUTH WE BELIEVE..
TRUTH WILL TRIUMPH..
