TENSION AT AMERICAN COLLEGE
Students Seek Collector’s Intervention to Deal With Rowdy Elements

Tension prevailed at the American College as the staff protesting against the Bishop’s administration broke the barricades inside the campus that have been allegedly used to intimidate the staff and students for quite sometime.
Subsequently, a section of the students submitted a petition to the District Collector seeking his intervention to exterminate rowdy elements allegedly intimidating the staff and the students inside the campus (who are attending ‘classes under the trees’ and are fighting against the illegal take over of the college by Bishop and his men).
According to the students, the barricades were established near the chapel and the main hall ten months ago (actually only a couple of months before!) after the problem started in the college.
It was alleged that the students supporting the Bishop and the rowdy elements employed by the Bishop’s administration were manning the barricades.
Occasionally, the personal manning the barricades used to block the access of agitating staff members and their families to reach out to their (residential) quarters and also tease the girl students staying in the hostel.
Such kind of teasing was rife during the weekends since the campus will be empty. They also used to harass the students, who were supporting the (fighting) staff. Students named a few persons like Ilango, Selvam, James and Palani behind this kind of activities and charged that they were much involved in the violence in the campus on March 14 (2011) and their pictures were there on every daily However, no action was taken against them (by the former government) and they were the ones managing the barricades in the college, the students charged.

Under these circumstances, On Tuesday (20.09.2011), a person broke into the house of Prof. Silas Ebenezer (residing in the campus) and attacked his relative, a schoolgirl present in the house that time. On the pretext of returning some money to the professor, he (the ‘thief’ employed by the Bishop’s administration) gained access to house and started threatening the girl with knife. He had tied her up and took away the gold ornaments.
Prof. Silas said that he was away on a prctical trip (with students). Upon hearing the news, he had rushed to the house and found it ranacked. A case has been registered in the Tallakulam Police Station.
When he went to collect the FIR copy along with his driver and other relatives (on 21.09.2011 morning around 10.30 am), his vehicle was not allowed beyong the barricade (the person manning the barricade shouted at Dr. Silas that he is NOT allowed to go out). The staff witnessing the scene intervened and irked by the attitude of the people manning the barricades, broke the barricade. Subsequently, a heated argument erupted between the staff and supporters of the Bishop. Silas’s car driver was attacked by the Bishop’s supporters claiming that he held a knife which was actually the small blade used to cut the wires, as he was also an electrician. The injured car driver was admitted at the GRH, he added.
According to the police sources, Tallakulam police had gone to the spot and negociated with both sides and the situation was brought under control. The police also ruled out any tension in the campus.
Later, the students also met Collector U.Sagayam, who said that he had assured stringent measures against such elements inside the campus.
