ALL is not well with the way the various dioceses of the Church of South India (CSI) manage their money, if one were to go by the fact that the Income Tax (I T) department has sought clarifications on their assessment for the year 2008-2009.
According to a document available with Express, the I T department has sought a detailed report on the tsunami funds received by the Madras and Madurai-Ramanad dioceses of the CSI. besides raising queries on the sale of various properties, including those in Kodaikanal. belonging to the Madurai Ramnad Diocese.
The letter states that the diocese should provide information including the name of the purchaser and also the price details. A communication from SR Mahadevan. Deputy Director of Income Tax (DDIT) Exemptions — 1, Chennai has also sought the measures taken by the Madurai-Ramnad diocese, to maintain transparency in the sale of the property and the valuation of the property.
In addition I T department has demanded a detailed report on all the complaints received by the CSI Trust Association regarding foreign funds received by the association and the synod as reflected in the annual filing of form and the utilisation of the same in its constituent dioceses. Details of donations/receipts from various dioceses/sub-units that are not reflected in the main account of synod either as educational institution or otherwise should have to be submitted to the I-T department along with copies of bank accounts maintained by sub-units of CSITA including the synod and the purpose of operating the account and the utilisation of these funds.
