Jan. 28: The Madurai Bench of Madras high court on Friday directed the Madurai police to register a case against Church of South India (CSI) MaduraiRamanathapuram diocese Bishop Christopher Asir if he was found to have committed criminal breach of trust by allegedly selling the government-assigned land to a firm.
Justice V. Periyakaruppaiah ordered the CCB inspector, Madurai district, to file a case if cognisable offences were made out against the Bishop.
In his criminal original petition, S. Christopher Salmond, a member of the Madurai-Ramanathapuram diocese which is under the control of CSI said that seven acres of land at Ratchinayapuram, presently worth about `20 crore, were transferred in favour of American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions in 1913.
A total of 30.56 acres was provided as assignment to the mission on certain conditions and the land was later transferred to tye CSI
