GOVT SHOULD APPOINT HIGH LEVEL OFFICER FOR AMERICAN COLLEGE

THE NEW INDIAN EXPRESS| APRIL 2, 2011.

The Citizen's Forum Concerned for Higher Education has urged the state government to appoint a high level officer to take charge of the American College here on Friday (1-04-2011).
The forum, which presented an interim statement came down heavily on the Directorate of Collegiate Education and state government for not taking any measures to solve this persisting problems between two parties which has taken its toll on the students as well as the college itself.
The forum consisted of Ramesh Patnaik, All India Forum for Right to Education, Hyderabad; R.Murali, Former Syndicate Member, MKU, Vice President of People Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL); Vasanthi Natchiappan, Dept of Biotechnology, Bharathidasan University; Ramasamy, Retired teacher from Karur; Advocate Paulraj from Rajapalayam and Kesavan from Centre for Protection of Civil Liberties (CPCL), Madurai.
Addressing the media persons, Ramesh Patnaik said that appointing a high level official to take charge of the college will be the most suitable solution to this problem since he can bring the college back into normalcy and look into possibilities of conducting the examinations.
The high level officer also can take measures to release the salary for the faculty which was pending for the last four months, he said.
The officer can also make necessary arrangements to bring back all lecturers who were working in the college until December 10, 2010 (the day Bishop's men broke open and took over the college) and remove any antisocial elements in the campus supporting either of the parties, he said.
The forum charged that DCE instead of solving the problem became part of the problem by clearly taking side. Neither had it approved the self re-employment of the superannuated principal, Chinnaraj Joseph Jaikumar till the end of the academic year not did it confirm the appointment of Mahan made by a non-executive Bishop on December 1.
The DCE did not make any alternative arrangement for the smooth running of the college. The irresponsible behaviour of the DCE led to the situation where Mohan considers himself as the principal on one hand and P.R. Anbudurai who was vice-princip[al and received charges from former principal, Chinnaraj Joseph considers himself as the principal of the college.
The forum also suggested that the American College Governing Council may be amended suitably taking the spirit of Tamil nadu Private College Act especially in the matters relating to ythe appointment of principals. Immediate steps may be initiated bt the Higher Education Secretary as as emergency act for the appointment of a full time principal as per the UGC norms. The government must ensure transparency in the appointment of a full time principal, he stated.
"It will hardly an hour for the government to solve this problem and we are wondering what is stopping the government from doing so" the forum expressed concerns.
