700 AMERICAN COLLEGE STUDENTS TO WRITE EXAM

MKU to conduct exams for left out students

AR.MEYYAMMAI | DECCAN CHRONICLE | CHENNAI EDITION | MADURAI | 26.07.2011

July 25:
The Madurai Kamaraj University has finally intervened to conduct exams for 700 plus students of the American College whose studies were affected by the internal strife in the institution.
Even semester examinations for the undergraduate and postgraduate students who could not attend earlier would begin on Wednesday (from July 27 to August 5, 2011).
College sources said an approximate of 750 candidates including 240 final year UG and PG students did not appear for the examinations conducted by the acting principal K Mohan, who has the support of Bishop Christopher Asir. in April this year.

At the initiative of higher education secretary R Kannan, the university officials headed by Dean of College Development Council David Amirtharaj held talks with both the Bishop's supporters and the striking staff opposing  "his illegal takeover" of the college.

"We have brought both the sides to the negotiating tables successfully and have arrived at a compromise formula according to which examinations will be conducted in the college under the supervision of seven observers", an MKU official said.

The government, he said, is keen to ensure that the students are not affected by the infighting. While the striking stall have agreed to evaluate the papers in the interest of the students' welfare, the Bishop's management has accepted to extend cooperation and make available all infrastructure for conducting the examinations, sources said.

'Though a centralized valuation system would be put in place with both external and internal examiners correcting the papers in the campus itself, the varsity intends to take up the responsibility of publishing the results to avoid problems though it is an autonomous college. However, our first focus is to hold the exams successfully and then concentrate on the next stage." another university official said.

Meanwhile, highly placed sources said the government has early this month issued, a show-cause notice to Bishop (and also to Mr. Mohan and Dr. P.R. Anbudurai) asking him (them) why a special officer should not be appointed when there has been law and order problems and the management controlled by him could not conduct exams for the students and pay salaries for the staff. "However, the Bishop has obtained an interim stay from the Madras high court against taking any action based on the notice." a source in the higher education department said.
